ISO 250, f/11, 1/25 @ 200mm. I don’t know what it is but there is something that I like about dune fence. This was taken this past October over in Bay Head NJ late in the day. It is not an overly exciting photo however, it is simple and colorful. Sometimes that is just what people want. The beach is a relaxing place just as the end of the day is. If you put both of these components together it increases your success. Additionally, the light can be pretty harsh out there mid day. Early evening will provide you with colors that are more vibrant (especially after a rain shower), longer shadows, side-light (which increases textures) and the list goes on. The propose for using a telephoto lens to shoot the dune fence was because I wanted the fence to be the focus of the picture. By shooting at 200mm it enabled me to throw-out the background easily; even at f/11. When using this technique consider your background. Even though it will not be in focus it will still play as role as a backdrop in the photo. In this case the blue sky, blue water, yellow golden-rod, and sand all add a terrific color contrast which is very fitting for the time of day yet it does not take away from the overall focus of the picture. This photo is available for purchase on my site Caught-Outside Photography in the “local” gallery.
