“Sankaty Head Lighthouse: Nantucket, MA”
- Fact: Deer can run 35mph.
I learned this at 5:30am this past Sunday while in Nantucket. One thing I had to do during my visit was to photograph the lighthouses; as cliché as it may seem. (I’m a big fan of lighthouses.) Gung-ho on taking a photo of the Sankaty Head lighthouse during sunrise I awoke early; packed up my camera gear and hopped on my rented scooter and tore off down Baxter Road before daybreak. As I zipped down the street, perfectly manicured hedges and seaside laws whizzed past as glimpses of the ocean below opened up in between historic homes. The speedometer read 35 and rabbits ran across the street in front of me. All I kept thinking was “I need to get there before the sun comes up.” As I turn to the right to my surprise I see a deer running parallel to me; not more than 2 feet away. I could have reached out a touched the damn thing. I must have startled it along with the entire neighborhood. It must have been at least 3-4 seconds before I letup on the throttle and 60 yards later the deer passed and crossed over into another yard. The doe must not have been able to pass me since we were both keeping pace with one another. Crazy! In the end I made it to the lighthouse and it was slightly overcast.
*Upon later study I learned that deer can run between 30-40 mph. “thanks Google.”

“Sunrise Over Deadman’s Bay” One of my favorite photos of the trip. I took this the morning of our departure. This also happens to be the same spot where Brooklyn Decker, Jessica Gomes, Cintia Dicker and Hillary Rhoda had their Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Shoot back in November. It’s now on the shelves and their shoots can be seen here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011_swimsuit/onlocation/british-virgin-islands/

You can view this photo on my site Caught-Outside Photography. It is not available for prints yet because I can’t get the color just right. I am having a problem with the Greens even my offsite printing vendor is having issues. Until then please enjoy on the screen.

-This is a true story about the island you see out in the middle of my photograph.-
Edward Teach, the pirate “Blackbeard” marooned some of his crew that he considered ‘mutinous’ upon a tiny island off the coast of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Called ‘The Dead Man’s Chest’ as nothing could live there except lizards, snakes and mosquitoes. Each mutineer was handed a cutlass and a bottle of rum, in the hope that they would kill each other, but a month later when Blackbeard revisited, the fifteen were all still alive. The incident sparked the verse in Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’:
Fifteen Men on a dead man’s chest,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Drink to the devil had done for the rest,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

This picture was taken on Peter Island in the B.V.I (one of the 500 world’s best Hotels / Resorts in the world according to Travel & Leisure) while on a sunset loop. Just before sunset one of the island’s staff will drive you up to the top of the island and drop you off with hors d’oeuvres and wine or anything else you request and they will come back to pick you up after the sun has gone down. In the distance is St. John’s and Norman Island and, as you watch the sun go down (you may even catch the green flash).
It is very easy to get a wrong exposure when shooting sunsets. Most people end up overexposing and loose detail in the highlights or underexpose and loose detail in the shadows. My trick is to expose on one of the semi-dark clouds this way I know I won’t overexpose the image. I will then bump up or down the exposure by 1/3 of a stop depending on the results. More than likely it will be 1/3 of a stop down to preserve the shadows. This is because it is much easier to retrieve detail in the shadows than it is to retrieve them in the highlights.
