Canon EOS 1D Mark III (review), Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM (review) ISO 200; 16mm; f/3.5; sec .125 This shot was taken up in Maine. I spent about 45 minutes trying to get this shot right; while being eaten alive my mosquitoes. I wanted to capture a long exposure of the water so that is would give the impression of fog or mist over the water. The sun had already dropped down over the horizon about 25 minutes before I snapped this shot but the long exposure enabled the camera to absorb the available light.

Canon EOS 1D Mark III (review), Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS UMS (review), 200mm, ISO 200, f/32, 1/4sec. I’ll be honest with this one. The camera settings don’t make a lot of sense for this shot. It was early in the morning just as the sun was coming up over the water in Jupiter Fl and I was tired. I wanted to recreate the wallpaper on the Mac computers. They have a few wallpapers that look like moving water. (If you have a Mac you’ll know what I’m talking about.) The reason for shooting during sunrise was because I wanted to get those early morning sun colors reflecting in the water. I chose to use my telephoto lens so I could get up close to a group of ripples just as they were rolling in. This lens also has (IS) which helped me hold the lens still while I was panning with a slow exposure. My reason for panning was so that the picture would look smooth like a painting. Photographing water like this creates a wonderful affect because the water is not only moving towards you but flowing and rolling up and down. The long exposure picks up on these movements and your final results show the direction of all these different movements. I printed this photo on a 24x36 canvas and I have it hanging in my home on a blue wall. It looks amazing and I look forward to adding more similar “water” pictures.
