“Sankaty Head Lighthouse: Nantucket, MA”
- Fact: Deer can run 35mph.
I learned this at 5:30am this past Sunday while in Nantucket. One thing I had to do during my visit was to photograph the lighthouses; as cliché as it may seem. (I’m a big fan of lighthouses.) Gung-ho on taking a photo of the Sankaty Head lighthouse during sunrise I awoke early; packed up my camera gear and hopped on my rented scooter and tore off down Baxter Road before daybreak. As I zipped down the street, perfectly manicured hedges and seaside laws whizzed past as glimpses of the ocean below opened up in between historic homes. The speedometer read 35 and rabbits ran across the street in front of me. All I kept thinking was “I need to get there before the sun comes up.” As I turn to the right to my surprise I see a deer running parallel to me; not more than 2 feet away. I could have reached out a touched the damn thing. I must have startled it along with the entire neighborhood. It must have been at least 3-4 seconds before I letup on the throttle and 60 yards later the deer passed and crossed over into another yard. The doe must not have been able to pass me since we were both keeping pace with one another. Crazy! In the end I made it to the lighthouse and it was slightly overcast.
*Upon later study I learned that deer can run between 30-40 mph. “thanks Google.”
